Quilt dresses & Accuquilt

Quilt dresses have definelty become a bit of an obsession for me, in the best possible way! A nice instant gratification project between pixel quilts, a palet cleanser if you will!

Originally when I started making quilt dresses, I would try and find quilt tops ready made that would work. However, I have learned through making many, that being able to completely design the quilt top that will be cut into, to create a quilt dress is my preferred method of making them.

Bring on the Accuquilt!

Accuquilt has allowed me to easily cut all the blocks needed for my dresses in no time.

The brand new 16” Accuquilt Qube offers the ability to create 72 different, mix and match quilt blocks.

The dress I made from 5 x 1 yard cuts of Riley Blakes line – Botanic Blast. The larger scale prints were perfect for the 6” center square and quilt top was cut and sewn in less than half a day.

The dress, which takes only 12 quilt blocks to make, was made using 2 different fabric variations of the Diamond Star Block were cut for the simple dress pattern (vogue 1802) and sewn up within a couple of hours.

The quilt top was machine pieced using a slightly shorter than normal stitch length to give the quilt top strength. The dress seams and hem were sewn using a serger and armholes and neck were finished with single fold bias tape.

I cannot emphasize enough how fast the Accuquilt 16″ Qube makes peicing a quilt top. Not only is it super fast because of being able to layer 6 layers of fabric on the dies, the large blocks also enable you to whip up a complex looking quilt, in no time.

With time to spare after piecing and making the dress was so quick! I whipped up a matching Fifth Avenue bag, pattern from Sallie Tomato from the scraps left over from the dress!
